About Sencha Uji Hikari

Sencha Uji Hikari is a refined expression of Kyoto’s long-standing tea heritage, crafted from a rare cultivar known for its clarity and depth. Produced in the Uji region, this low-stem Sencha green tea is lightly steamed and delicately roasted to draw out its natural sweetness and smooth, mellow profile. With its elegant balance of green freshness and subtle toastiness, it captures the quiet sophistication of this Platinum Uji tea.

About

This rare Sencha is grown in the celebrated tea fields of Kyotanabe, Kyoto — a region renowned for producing some of Japan’s most elegant and nuanced green teas. Made exclusively from the Uji Hikari cultivar, it offers a refined character with notes of steamed greens, subtle sweetness, and a hint of toast. Harvested in late spring and crafted using time-honoured techniques, this Sencha reflects the precision and balance for which Uji teas are known.

Cultivation & Processing

Grown in fertile soils - Uji Hikari undergoes meticulous processing to preserve its unique qualities. Uji Sencha teas are traditionally shaded for about 1 week to 10 days and then the tea leaves are lightly steamed to halt oxidation while retaining their vibrant green color and fresh aroma. Subsequently, the leaves are gently roasted at 81°C, a technique that enhances their natural sweetness and imparts a subtle, toasty note without overpowering the tea's inherent flavours. This careful balance of steaming and roasting results in a sencha that is both refreshing and comforting.

Effects

Sencha Uji Hikari offers a soothing and invigorating experience. Its moderate caffeine content provides a gentle energy boost, while the presence of L-theanine promotes relaxation and mental clarity.
